ovember-December 2009

FROM THE COMMANDER:

The months of November and December will be very busy.
Veteran's Day, November 11, is a special day for every
American.  The pledge of the VFW   is to honor the dead by
helping the living.  Veteran's Day is a good time to reflect on
that commitment.

The officers and House Committee continue to look at the
financial "well being" of the Post.  We recently restored the
paid shifts for the bartenders and lunch cook.  A grateful
thanks to those that volunteered during our time of financial
challenge.  With the cooler weather came lower utility bills and
an ease in the financial picture.

The calendar will allow you to see the many activities that take
place at OUR POST.  Please try to attend a function, stop in
for lunch, sign up for Nancy's pasta, or come to enjoy a Friday
night dinner.  We need and welcome your support.  You will
enjoy good food and fellowship.

I would like to wish everyone a safe and warm Thanksgiving.
This is a special time for enjoying friends and family.  Take a
few minutes to thank and remember our troops and their
families, especially those continuing to serve in Iraq and
Afghanistan.  I look forward to seeing everyone at the next Post
meetings in November and December.

In service,

Dennis Hutton
Commander, VFW Post 10804
FROM THE LADIES AUXILIARY PRESIDENT:

Sisters,

In the past few months we have completed Operation Backpack, collected coats to Keep Our Kids
warm, along with knitting hats and scarves.  All your efforts in these endeavors have been greatly
appreciated.  We also provided clothing, food, soap, toothpaste, paper products, etc., for a
grandmother who now has custody of nine grandchildren, ages 3 through 15 years.  I cannot even
comprehend the work that this encompasses!  I am only thankful that we were able to assist her.

The Voice of Democracy, Patriots Pen and Teacher of the Year entrants have all been collected and
we have a fine collection of essays.  If you know any Horry County teachers, please thank them for the
wonderful job they do to instill patriotism in our classrooms.

Veterans Day is fast approaching and I invite you to attend the services at the NMB Memorial Gardens,
followed by lunch at the Post.  Please remember we need your homemade desserts, deviled eggs, and
salads, to make the luncheon a success.  The high point of this day will be the drawing for the
Wheelbarrow of Cheer along with numerous other prizes.  How appropriate that all monies collected will
support the "Puppies Behind Bars" program which provides trained dogs to disabled Veterans.  Your
donations assist in the cost of rearing, feeding, and training of these puppies.

We will support our holiday efforts with a turkey raffle in December.  The proceeds will help to provide a
Christmas party for the children of military families.  This year we will join the Blue Star Mothers and
American Legion to provide a Children's Party on December 13 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the American
Legion Post in Little River.

Holiday cards are available for all VFW and auxiliary members to thank our military for their service and
safe return.  We encourage a donation that will be used to send healthy snacks to our troops.

Thanksgiving is a time for giving thanks.  I thank God for the freedoms we enjoy thanks to our troops,
and for good health, and the love and support of family and friends.  I have a long list, but at the top of
the list would be thanks for the privilege of being acquainted and serving with the wonderful Post and
auxiliary members who support the VFW.  Thank you so much!!

Sincerely,

Catherine Steel, President, VFW Post 10804 Ladies Auxiliary
MEETING NOTES:  LADIES AUXILIARY

Clothing donations are always necessary and appreciated.  Consider the impact of colder weather and the need for
heavier clothing for children and adults.

February 6 is the tentative date for a Fashion Show/Tea.  Stay tuned for details!!!

Volunteers are always welcome to assist for Thursday night tacos.

FROM THE MEN'S AUXILIARY --

The Men's Auxiliary hosted a very successful fishing outing for disabled veterans recently.  Men were treated to lunch
as well as good fun and fellowship.

The MA continues to raise funds for their projects by preparing and serving wings on the first Wednesday of the month
in addition to Sunday Brunch on the second Sunday of each month.  (Check calendar for further information).

Continuing projects include support of Fisher House at Fort Bragg, and our local drive for funds for Operation Dog
Tag.  The men are also working with the Post in the installation of a fence at the entrance to the building and in the
development of horseshoe pits and a bocce ball court on the south side of the building.

OPERATION DOG TAG UPDATE

Operation Dog Tag is a Puppies Behind Bars initiative which was started in 2006.  The program
employs actual prisoners to conduct rigorous training of Labrador retrievers who are then
assigned to wounded veterans suffering from PTSD and TBI  (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and
Traumatic Brain Injury).  The dogs are specially trained to respond to commands that will enable
the veteran to return to as normal a civilian life as possible.

Obviously the costs associated with training, matching the veteran to the animal, transporting the
veteran to the facility for pairing with the animal, and continuing oversight of the program are
many.  The program operates on donations.

The Ladies Auxiliary of the Post 10804 has accepted the challenge of this program and will be
designating fundraisers during the 2009-12010 year.  Chances for the
Wheelbarrow of Cheer
on display in the Canteen are now available at $5 for one or $10 for three.  The lucky ticket holder
will receive the actual wheelbarrow (donated by Home Depot) and its contents, 50+ bottles of wine
and assorted spirits (all donated).
The drawing will take place on Veterans Day,
November 11.
 There are 15 additional prizes!!!
