VFW Post 10804 and our auxiliaries are looking for
the talented youth of our communities to enter our
exciting essay/art contests where you can win
money, savings bonds, and/or college scholarships!

Voice of Democracy:

This scholarship program is open to
students in grades 9-12 only.  Home-
schooled students are eligible;  foreign
exchange students are not eligible.

Deadline for entry:  November 1, 2008

National Prizes
1st Place:  $30,000 Scholarship
Other national finalists win scholarships
ranging from $1,000 to $16,000.

This program is an audio-essay
contest for high school students.  

The 2007-2008 theme is: “SERVICE
AND SACRIFICE BY AMERICA'S
VETERANS BENEFIT TODAY'S
YOUTH BY _____________".

The first-place winner from the post will
compete against other winners in South
Carolina.  The state level winner receives a
scholarship and competes  all the first-place
VFW State winners.  

Besides competing for the top prize, each
state's first-place winner receives an all-
expense-paid trip to Washington, DC,
sponsored by Target.    

This program is designed to foster patriotism
by allowing students the opportunity to voice
their opinion in a three to five minute
theme-based essay.

Young American Creative
Patriotic Art Contest:

This contest is open to students in
grades 9-12 only.  Home-schooled
students are eligible;  foreign exchange
students are not eligible.

Deadline for entry:  March 31, 2009

National Prizes
1st Place:  $10,000 Scholarship
2nd Place:  $5,000 Scholarship
3rd Place:  $2,500 Scholarship
4th Place:  $1,500 Scholarship
5th Place:  $500 Scholarship
6th Place:  $500 Scholarship
7th Place:  $500 Scholarship

Art must be on paper or canvas.  Water color,
pencil, pastel, charcoal, tempera, crayon,
acrylic, pen-and-ink or oil may be used.  Digital
art may be used but must be on paper or
canvas... No discs will be accepted.  When
submitting computer/digital art, be aware that
all images need to be original.  i.e., do not
scan in or otherwise use photographs or art
created by others;  all images incorporated
must be the artist's own and not lifted from
publications or outside sources.

Do not frame.  Submit canvas entries on
stretcher frames.  Other entries must be
matted on white.  Do not use color mats.  
If you use the American Flag in your entry, it
must conform to the Federal Flag Code as far
as color, number of stars and stripes, and
other pertinent rules of the code.

Entry must have been done during current
school year - note that you must have your
teacher's signature - only one entry per student.

Each entry will be judged on the originality of
concept, presentation, and patriotism
expressed;  the content of how it relates to
patriotism and clarity of ideas;  the design
technique, total impact of work, and
uniqueness.

Patriot's Pen:

This scholarship program is open to
students in grades 6-8 only.  Home-
schooled students are eligible;  foreign
exchange students are not eligible.

Deadline for entry:  November 1, 2008

Patriot's Pen is a youth-essay writing contest.  
This nationwide competition gives students the
opportunity to write essays expressing their
views on democracy  and patriotism.   

The theme of 2007-2008 is:
“WHY AMERICA'S VETERANS
SHOULD BE HONORED”

Contestants are asked to write a 300-400
word essay based on this theme.

Essays are judged locally and regionally.  The
state winners then compete for national awards.

The National First-Place winner receives a
$10,000 savings bond and an all-expense-paid
trip to Washington D.C., and 44 other national
finalists will each receive a U.S. Savings
Bond ranging in value from $1,000 to $10,000.

Please note that prizes are also awarded at the
local, district, and state level of judging.
